ABSTRACT
Background and objective : Bedsores are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among the admitted patients of hospital. This study was undertaken to estimate the point prevalence of bedsore to assess the functional dependence in the activity of daily life amongst the admitted patients in a tertiary care hospital.

Material amnd methods
A cross sectional survey was done/conducted using a structured questionnaire on 25th Oct 2010. Seven hundred fifty one patient were studied from medical, surgical, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, private, and emergency units. Katz Index of Independence in Activites of Daily Living was used to evaluate the level of functional dependence of patients in their various activities of daily life. Braden Scale was used to assess the risk factors for the formation of bedsores.

Result
Ten percent (74) patients were found to be having bedsores in different stages. Mean age (yrs) of the patient was 40.39 + 19.38 yrs. Most (86.5%) of the patient were admitted through emergency. Maximum patients (33.3%) with bedsore were from neurosurgical ward and orthopedic unit (30%). The mean Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily living (ADLs) score was 1.30 + 1.74 with the range of 0 -6. Mean Braden Scale Assessment score was 12.66 + 3.90 with the

range of 6 - 21. Sacrum was the commonest site of development of bedsores in all four stages; 16% patient had more than one ulcer

Conclusion
Ten percent prevalence of bedsore indicates the need to improve the quality of care in the hospital.
